Gopal Krishna Gokhale was born on 9 May 1866 in Kothluk, in Ratnagiri District, Maharashtra, India to Krishna Rao Gokhale and Valubai. He was born in a Hindu Brahmin Family. His father worked as a clerk. Despite having financial problems, his family ensured that he received a Western education. Which would place him in a position to obtain employment as a clerk or minor official in the British Raj.

Gopal Krishna Gokhale completed his schooling education at Raja Ram High School in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. After that he went to Bombay in 1884 to complete his further education, being one of the first Indian generations to complete graduation.

After shifting to Pune, and gaining experience in a teaching job at a school, he joined the Fergusson College and worked as a History and Political Economics Professor. Later on, he became the principal of that College in 1902.

Gopal Krishna Gokhale met Mahadev Govind Ranade in Pune, who was a well-known scholar and counselor. He had a great influence on the social works of Justice Mahadev Govind Ranade. He considered Mahadev Govind Ranade as his mentor. They worked together in the Pune Sarvajanik Sabha.
